Moonlight seems to be the it movie of 2016: coming of age story of black, gay, poor male in Miami, Florida. That's just a description. You first meet Chiron as an elementary school-age student, then as a teenager and in the final scenes as a grown man. Each iteration just about broke my heart.I know, so cliche, but the movie's flow runs through your heart - you're almost holding Chiron's hand through the film. Naomie Harris is constant as Chiron's mother - from casual, needy druggie to addict to rehabilitated prostelizer, and Andre Holland as the adult friend. Chiron's known since childhood. One should see this movie as one beautiful story of one special man.
Manchester by the sea caught me crying and sighing and hoping for Casey Affleck's character: he has been appointed guardian of his late brother's 16/17 year old son. And he doesn't want to move back to Manchester (for reasons that become apparent). Sad as the movie is, there are laugh out loud moments. Plus all the scenes of boats on the water.

SULLY
Fine by me, though post-review articles seem to be troubled by the ending. It's a movie people. This always happens in a movie: the ending or the characters or the costumes or the dialogue or the music isn't "right" or accurate or period perfect. We know the plane lands on the water. We wanna see the trembling and freezing standing on the wings. Is that too much? Clint Eastwood, noted Republican and fretter re: the Gov, tilted the camera his way. Why is there surprise?

Brooklyn
Just lovely. No gunshots. No mugging. No violence against women. Or men. A handful of mean-spiritedness between the heroine and a shopkeeper, and a couple of pinches of duplicity from the heroine in light of her marriage, kept it from being too nice and "when we was all white." Okay, that may have been unnecessarily race conscious, but, when was the last time we just had a "nice" black movie. I think it was "Sounder."

Creed
Is this a Rocky movie? If so, it's my first. Believable fight cinematography, training moments, Philly street scenes. MBJ tall, dark and handsome. Tessa Thompson poised, beautiful and sensitively portrayed. Warm and tender love scenes. SStallone's face appeared to be crafted from modeling clay. Patient development of trainer/fighter relationship. I knew how fight would end and was satisfied!

Revenant
Leaving the theater I felt cold and craved a toddy or another sweater or a very hot bath or all of the mentioned. I liked the very physical LdC as much as his "high"scene in WOWS. Yeah, I'm sure someone else was sailing down the rapids and climbing up some of those slippery hills, but give Leo the damned Oscar. This is feeling like when DW got the O for Training Day and we all knew he deserved it for Malcom X, or He Got Game or Hurricane. Hollywood, please.

movies 2016
I'll See You in my Dreams - Blythe Danner and others in what I expected would be a fluffy rom-com but actually a much sturdier examination of life, living, love and death.
Hello, Are you There - a Romanian film that might be compared to You've Got Mail. A bored husband and wife (she works in a luxury dry cleaners, he for a symphony orchestra as a page turner- he injured a hand in an accident) - they stumble upon each other in a chat room, and fall in love with the chat room versions of themselves. Surrounding their story, another tale from their going on 18 year old son who is constantly dreaming (?) about sex. he imagines himself in a porn movie - it could have happened.
