Moonlight seems to be the it movie of 2016: coming of age story of black, gay, poor male in Miami, Florida. That's just a description. You first meet Chiron as an elementary school-age student, then as a teenager and in the final scenes as a grown man. Each iteration just about broke my heart.I know, so cliche, but the movie's flow runs through your heart - you're almost holding Chiron's hand through the film. Naomie Harris is constant as Chiron's mother - from casual, needy druggie to addict to rehabilitated prostelizer, and Andre Holland as the adult friend. Chiron's known since childhood. One should see this movie as one beautiful story of one special man.
Manchester by the sea caught me crying and sighing and hoping for Casey Affleck's character: he has been appointed guardian of his late brother's 16/17 year old son. And he doesn't want to move back to Manchester (for reasons that become apparent). Sad as the movie is, there are laugh out loud moments. Plus all the scenes of boats on the water.
